Santa Monica Baykeeper
Founded in 1993, the Santa Monica Baykeeper's mission is to protect and restore the Santa Monica Bay, San Pedro Bay, and adjacent waters through enforcement, fieldwork, and community action. We work to achieve this goal through litigation and regulatory programs that ensure water quality protections in waterways throughout L.A. County.
DrainWatch

The DrainWatch program works to educate citizens about the impact of urban runoff on our coastal waters, enforce the Clean Water Act, and strengthen regulations.  It is a volunteer powered program with the aim of sourcing and tracking pollution discharging to our local rivers and beaches. Volunteers are trained in hands-on monitoring, data collection, water sampling techniques, and lab skills needed to assess the damage caused by urban runoff and other contaminants.

Internship Program: DrainWatch is currently seeking interns for our dynamic field and lab based urban water quality monitoring program!
Requirements

Preferred skills

The DrainWatch Intern will directly assist the Water Quality Coordinator in all aspects of running the program and coordinating volunteers. The DrainWatch Intern will typically prepare training documents and event announcements, update our map, and maintain our photo catalogs and volunteer directories. The DrainWatch Intern will also map or survey storm drains in the field (some days will involve both mapping and surveying). The DrainWatch Intern will also help prepare equipment for sampling events, process water quality samples following sampling events, and help keep the lab organized. Depending on your level of experience, you may be asked to oversee volunteers in the field or lab.

As part of the Baykeeper team, the DrainWatch intern will be asked to participate in outreach events such as tabling and educational presentations. DrainWatch sampling events tend to take place on weekends when volunteers are available; therefore the DrainWatch Intern must be able to work a couple of Sundays per month.
