King Tides have arrived in California! King tides are extreme high tide events that occur as the result of the combined gravitational forces of the sun and moon, providing a glimpse of what rising sea levels could look like in the coming years. Take some photos from February 6-8 and submit them to our statewide King Tides Photo Initiative site. For more information about King Tides, or where to view them, click here.

CALLING ALL SCIENTIFIC DIVERS and RESCUE CERTIFIED DIVERS
Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays in 2012
Divers are needed for our Kelp Monitoring and Restoration Project. Santa Monica Baykeeper has been restoring kelp forests acre by acre off of the Malibu and Palos Verdes coasts for the past 15 years. This legacy program touts a record urchin relocation in 2011 of over a half a million purple urchins! For more information on how to get involved with this project, please contact Brian Meux at bmeux@smbaykeeper.org, or call (310) 305-9645 ext. 107.
STONE CANYON CREEK RESTORATION
Saturday, February 18th & March 10th
Please help Santa Monica Baykeeper and Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission restore Stone Canyon Creek on UCLA's campus from 10am-1pm!
Please click to RSVP or see the flyer for more 2012 dates and information.
JOIN US FOR UNDERWATER PARKS DAY!
Saturday, January 21st
In commemoration of the 4th Annual Underwater Parks Day, join Santa Monica Baykeeper at a volunteer training session for our brand new program, MPA Watch. This is a hands on citizen monitoring program on our boat which will gather data to determine the efficacy of our new Marine Protected Areas, as well as provide an opportunity to reach out to the fishing & recreational water-sports communities about the new regulations and benefits of Southern California’s new Underwater Parks. For more information please contact Brian Meux at bmeux@smbaykeeper.org, or call (310) 305-9645 ext. 107.

Marine Program
The Marine Program has been a core part of Santa Monica Baykeeper's efforts since its founding in 1993. Working from our Santa Monica headquarters and on our 24' Radon research vessel, we restore key habitats, enforce regulations, and work with our litigation and advocacy program to advocate for clean water and healthy ecosystems.
Habitat Restoration Programs
Our internationally renowned Kelp Program is the core of our marine restoration efforts. Working acre by acre since 1997, Santa Monica Baykeeper's divers have led hundreds of rescue-certified volunteers in a relentless effort to map, monitor, and reverse the loss of giant kelp forest off L.A County's coastline.
To accelerate the restoration of this critical habitat, we are embarking on a new, four-year partnership with the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission (SMBRC), the Vantuna Research Group of Occidental College, and others to speed up the conversion of bleak "urchin barrens" back into the giant kelp forests that once supported more than 800 species off the shores of Malibu and Palos Verdes.
With our partners, our divers are also working to monitor and eventually restore endangered abalone, a key part of this ecosystem, and are studying eelgrass to determine current conditions and the likely process for restoring these lost habitats.

Marine Protected Area Monitoring & Enforcement
In December 2010, after years of research, advocacy, and public outreach by Santa Monica Baykeeper and our partners, the California Department of Fish and Game formalized a series of underwater parks known as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). This culminated a process that began 10 years ago when the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) became law in the State of California.
Now that the State is implementing these protected areas, Santa Monica Baykeeper's Marine Program is shifting its focus to monitoring and enforcement. Please see our Marine Life Protection Act / Marine Protected Areas page for more information on this historic effort. |
